Hands at Work in Africa

Reaching the poorest

Hands at Work is a Christian charity, based in South Africa, that is striving to reach the most vulnerable children in communities across Africa where HIV/Aids, orphans and poverty are at overwhelming levels and support structures are very low. The Filling Station has now been partnering with Hands at Work for ten years now.

Where are they at work?

They are currently working in 6 African countries, and taking care of over 3,000 children. When we say ‘taking care of’ this involves knowing every child by name, knowing their story, visiting & supporting their Caregivers in their homes, and making sure they have access to the 3 essential services: food, education and medical care.

What do they do?

The children are fed daily at a ‘Care Point’ which is run by local Care Workers who volunteer their time to care for these children physically, emotionally and spiritually. They are supported by local Hands at Work staff.

Our involvement

Over the last decade, Filling Station has taken out 7 different teams on short term mission trips to HAW – this has involved a week working in the HAW communities to help care for the children and support the Care Workers.

Many of those who have been on teams were so impacted by the work HAW are doing they are now supporting a child (or 2) financially with regular monthly donations – 30 children in total. In addition to these donations regular monthly donations are made to Hands at Work from the Filling Station Trust.

Jo Fothergill heads up the ‘Mercy Ministries’ side of The Filling Station. If you would like to join our Hands at Work Prayer WhatsApp group, or donate to Hands, get in touch with Jo: jo@thefillingstation.org.
